Property in Kincardine donated to Saugeen Conservation
Saugeen Conservation has received a land donation from Brian Powers of Chesley.
The property, located on the easterly edge of the former Bruce Township, at Sideroad 30 and Concession 2 (Glammis bog area), in the Municipality of Kincardine, is 15 hectares (37 acres) in size, three-quarters of which is a significant wetland complex and the remaining portion a diverse wooded area.
Powers was born and raised in the Chepstow area. His father, Jim Powers, was chairman of Saugeen Conservation from 1970-76. Like his father, Powers has a keen interest in conservation and the future well-being of this vast and diverse watershed.
“This is a beautiful piece of property and what better place for the property to be, than in the hands of Saugeen Conservation,” said Powers. “This land is a natural fit for the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority (SVCA) and I know that the agency will continue to look after the property in perpetuity."
“We’re honoured to be the recipient of this land donation,” said Luke Charbonneau, current chairman of Saugeen Conservation. “Mr. Powers has been extremely generous and we are truly grateful. Our promise, as Saugeen Conservation, is to ensure the future health of this important habitat within the Penetangore River Watershed.”
Powers also expressed his appreciation to the Municipality of Kincardine and councillor Randy Roppel for their efforts in cleaning up the natural area in and around the property. Prior to the donation, the area had sadly been used as a dumping ground.
“They did an incredible job of returning this site to its former beauty as a natural landscape," said Powers.
This 15-hectare property will be added to the current land holdings of the SVCA totaling 8,535 hectares of significant forests, wetland and headwater areas of our important river systems.
