Cambridge man identified as drowning victim on Nine Mile River, west of Dungannon
(ASHFIELD-COLBORNE-WAWANOSH, ON) - A 23-year-old Cambridge man has been identified as the drowning victim in an incident on the Nine Mile River, west of Dungannon, Friday evening.
The Huron County OPP was called to the scene at 5:53 p.m., along with Huron County Paramedic Services, the Lucknow Fire Department and Air Ornge, at a property located on Cransford Line, to assist a man who was unresponsive.
Police have since determined that two friends were canoeing the rapid waters of the Nine Mile River when they went around a blind corner and encountered a tree that had fallen across a portion of the river. They struck the deadfall, their canoe overturned and the victim became trapped below.
He was freed by his friend and brought to shore; however, despite the life-saving efforts performed by his friend and emergency crews, the man died at the scene.
The deceased has been identified as Nicholas ST PIERRE-BEKE, 23, of Cambridge.
A post-mortem examination will take place to determine the exact cause of death.
