Two Kincardine District Secondary School students are competing in Skills Ontario, slated to run May 1-3, in Toronto.

Brady Masur will compete in the individual carpentry category, while Declan Mowle is entered in the small-powered equipment section.

Qualifying competitions were held April 1 for students entered in 2D character animation, carpentry individual, culinary arts, small-powered equipment, TV and video production, and welding.

Held at eight colleges across the province, qualifying competitions ensure that the most prepared and talented students ultimately compete at the Skills Ontario Competition.

Students representing the top three school boards in each contest at each of the eight qualifiers advanced to the Skills Ontario competition, taking place at the Toronto Congress Centre.

At the Skills Ontario competition, students compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals, as well as monetary awards and job offers for select contests. Gold medallists are also eligible to go on to represent Ontario at the Skills Canada National Competition, May 31 to June 4, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

“The Skills Ontario competition is an opportunity to highlight and celebrate the young talent in our province and the important partnerships among Skills Ontario, industry, education, and government organizations that help bring skill development for youth to the forefront,” says Gail Smyth, executive director at Skills Ontario.

Featuring 68 skilled trades and technologies contests, and more than 2,400 competitors from elementary schools, high schools and colleges across Ontario, it is the largest skilled trades and technologies competition in Canada. Skills Ontario also hosts Young Women’s Conferences and a First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Student Conference in conjunction with the Skills Ontario competition.

Last year, Declan Mowle of KDSS won silver at the Skills Canada outdoor power and recreational equipment competition, held June 5-8, in Moncton, New Brunswick.
