Bruce County warden plants commemorative tree in Ripley
It was cold and windy Friday morning as Bruce County warden Mitch Twolan (above left), also mayor of Huron-Kinloss Township, was joined by Huron-Kinloss deputy mayor Wilfred Gamble (above right) in planting a commemorative tree in Ripley.

A handful of people braved the elements as the pair scooped the last couple of shovelfuls of dirt around the base of a sugar maple, planted in honour of Bruce County's 150th anniversary and Canada's 150th.

The plaque beside the tree reads: "This sugar maple tree has been planted for the people of the Township of Huron-Kinloss to commemorate the occasion of Bruce County's Sesquicentennial, 1867-2017."

Twolan said the year is going to be filled with special events to mark Bruce 150, including:

  • Bruce Remembers: Military Reunion Luncheon, June 3, at Noon, at the Chesley Community Centre. Cost is $50 per person.
  • Bruce County Doors Open, June 10-11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Saturday, and 1-4 p.m. on the Sunday, at various locations. Admission is free.
  • Canadian Forces Snowbirds, June 21, at the Saugeen Municipal Airport, Walkerton. Doors open at noon, and the show begins at 4 p.m. Admission is free.
  • Tiverton Lions Summer Kick-off, June 23-24. Free family event at the ball diamonds.
