Grade 12 KDSS student honoured as her mural hangs at north entrance of the school
Lindsay Glover is proud of her work and pleased to have it chosen to grace the north entrance at Kincardine District Secondary School.
The Grade 12 student's colourful mural was unveiled Friday afternoon, with plenty of glowing comments from the group assembled.
Principal Mark Ozorio welcomed everyone and said the four panels of the mural depict the four seasons of school. He praised Lindsay for her design and is thrilled to have the artwork at one of the most-used entrances of the school.
The KDSS Home and School Association held a contest last fall and invited students to share their designs. Lindsay's was the one selected and Charlene Wilson, president of the Home and School, was on hand to present her with the prize. KDSS art teacher Cati VanVeen also presented Lindsay with an award.
Lindsay said the mural design began as an art project and it was her first time ever using the computer program, Illustrator.
"What I came up with was the four banners for each of the four seasons, with KDSS in them," she said. "The first banner shows the start of the school year in the fall, then the Christmas Knights in the winter, then the spring arts show and skills competition in the spring, and finally graduation in the summer."
Admitting she had little experience on Illustrator, Lindsay said she drew her design in pencil first and then created it on computer. That took about two weeks, and then Ozorio added a few things, such as the Kinetic Knights robotics Team 781 logo, the Home and School logo, and the skills competition logo.
The design was completed in October and sent to Progressive Results Group, a printing shop in downtown Kincardine, to complete the larger version. That work was done two weeks ago and the four-panelled, six-foot-by-10-foot mural was mounted on the wall.
"It looks so different when it's this big," said Lindsay. "I'm very proud of it, but I can see the little flaws that nobody else sees."
Having taken art in Grades 9 and 10, Lindsay took two art courses this year: commercial design and computer art design. She plans to study graphic design at Fanshawe College in London. She is also competing in the graphic design category at the Skills Ontario competition May 1 in Toronto.
Ozorio said the mural is a wonderful addition to the north entrance at the school.
"This beautiful, colourful piece makes a great first impression," he said. "Students stop and look at it on their way in to school and when they leave. It's great. The mural is printed on vinyl, affixed to aluminum and then coated. It's made to last."
