Inaugural Kincardine Hike for Hospice raises more than $12,000
The Huron Shores Hospice steering committee is thrilled to announce that the inaugural Hike for Hospice in Kincardine has raised $12,127.45.
Held Sunday afternoon, under a bright, sunny sky but chilly breeze, the hike drew about 60 participants, beginning with registration and a warm-up at the Davidson Centre, and then a hike of the trails, led by Brad Kirkconnell of the Kincardine Trails Association.
Cheryl Cottrill, chairperson of the steering committee, welcomed the crowd and said that all the money raised stays local, with the initial goal to set up a one-bed suite at Tiverton Park Manor. The cost to do this is about $300,000 which covers the operating expenditures for two years. Of that amount, about $132,000 remains to be raised, said Cottrill.
Mike Rencheck, president and chief executive officer of Bruce Power, announced a $75,000 donation from the company which continues to do its part to support the community.
Kincardine mayor Anne Eadie welcomed everyone to the event which is in support of a great need in the Kincardine community.
"Thanks to the steering committee for all its hard work," she said, "not only in organizing this event, but for spearheading the drive to bring hospice services to our community."
The Kincardine Lions Club held a barbecue for all participants, and there were a number of activities for people to enjoy, including face-painting, Touch the Truck, and a free swim in the afternoon.
The next fund-raiser is Handbags for Hospice, slated for Thursday, Sept. 28, from 6-9 p.m., at the Kincardine Pavilion, featuring The Auctionista.
