Kincardine Lions Walk for Dog Guides raises more than $5,500
The Kincardine Lions Walk for Dog Guides, sponsored by Pet Valu, raised more than $5,500.
Held Sunday afternoon, at the Davidson Centre, Kincardine, the event drew a great crowd of participants, including 18 dogs and their handlers.
Sarah Cassidy of Point Clark and her autism assistance dog, "Ian," cut the ribbon to officially start the walk, and piper Jennifer Farrell of the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band led the participants to the trails beside Lions Park where the walk began.
The event also featured a barbecue, cupcakes, and a draw for a couple of pet treat baskets.
Last year, about 50 walkers and 20 dogs participated, raising $6,724 for the Lions Foundation of Canada which trains dog guides in six categories: Canine Vision, Hearing Ear, Service (for people in wheelchairs), Seizure Response, Autism Assistance and Diabetic Alert.
The Kincardine Lions were also busy earlier in the month, helping at the Bruce County Household Hazardous Day, held May 13 at the Town of Kincardine public works shed.
The Lions assisted by unloading hazardous products, such as paint cans, oil and batteries, from the vehicles lined up along Valentine Avenue and partway west along Bruce Avenue.
And members of the Lions Club were at the PRANCE riding academy in Port Elgin, recently. The club had donated $750 to PRANCE which was used to purchase matching "rider" shirts for 41 riders in the program.
