Lurgan church celebrating 160th anniversary with blast into the past
Sunday, June 25, marks the 160th anniversary of St. Luke's Anglican Church, Lurgan Beach, located at the northwest corner of Point Clark.
To mark the occasion, the congregation is holding its annual Gospel Sing at 2 p.m., on the lawn beside the church.
In addition, the church has invited some special guests to attend, says Russell Brubacher, past-warden of the church.
"We're having a festive cake made for the event, and we've invited Cliff Gamble and his wife, Elizabeth, to cut the cake for us," says Brubacher. "He's 95 years old and they've been married 67 years.
"St. Luke's Church was literally born-in-a-barn, and it was Cliff's grandfather's barn where the church first began gathering., So it's pretty special to have him and his wife attend and cut the cake."
Another part of the anniversary ceremony, will feature the unveiling of the 1863 church registry which has been replicated, a project that took five years, completed by Tim and Jessie McGinnis of Kincardine.
