Bruce Power launches $100,000 fund focusing on community safety initiatives
Bruce Power was joined Tuesday (Aug. 1) by Marie-France Lalonde, Ontario’s minister of community safety and correctional services, to launch a $100,000 fund that will invest in community safety initiatives from 2018-20.

“We are excited to launch this new Community Safety Fund, which will be available to local organizations in Bruce, Grey and Huron counties, as well as the local Indigenous communities, as we work together to support and promote all facets of safety,” said Mike Rencheck, Bruce Power’s president and chief executive officer. “I appreciate the minister of community safety joining us to launch this fund and visiting our site to see first-hand our commitment to Safety First – our No. 1 value.”

During her visit, Lalonde toured the new 23,000-square-foot fire-training facility, which includes a mock-up of real plant conditions allowing firefighters to practise in realistic situations. The facility is an important training tool for Bruce Power’s on-site firefighters and provides opportunities for firefighters in local communities who regularly train at the facility.

Lalonde was provided with updates on key safety measures the company has in place, including memoranda-of-understanding with municipal government and local hospitals, cyber security, communications with local residents, emergency preparedness, and a range of activities throughout the organization.

“During my visit to the Bruce Power site, it was clear to me that they put a great deal of focus and effort into safe operations, worker safety, and active engagement within the local communities,” said Lalonde. “The Community Safety Fund that was launched, is a welcome investment, and will bring an important safety message to Bruce, Huron, and Grey counties. I commend the dedication and professionalism of Bruce Power’s people and their commitment to community safety.”

Applications for the Community Safety Fund will be accepted until Dec. 21, 2017, through the Community Investment and Sponsorship page at www.brucepower.com/in-the-community/community-investment/sponsorship-program/.
