Kincardine Lions mark completion of Splash Pad with community barbecue
The Kincardine and District Lions Club welcomed a good crowd to Lions Park, beside the Davidson Centre in Kincardine, to celebrate the completion of the Splash Pad project, and recognize 100 years of Lionism, with a community barbecue Saturday afternoon.
The $650,000 Splash Pad, aimed at developing Lions Park into 'a premier destination for families,' was completed in three phases, said Kincardine Lion John McManus who spearheaded the project.
- Phase I, completed in 2015, was focused on getting the actual Splash Pad portion up and running.
- Phase 2, completed in 2016, included the construction of 'Facilities Accessibility Design Standards (FADS)'-compliant washrooms and change rooms.
- Phase 3, completed in 2017, included landscaping, and the installation of the Lions Friendship Arch and flagpoles.
The Kincardine Lions recognized the 100th anniversary of Lionism with the formal completion of this community project.
Although the Kincardine and District Club was chartered in 1974, it was in 1917 that Melvin Jones, a Chicago businessman, promoted the idea of a service group aimed at benefiting the community without regard to politics, religion, race, or in any way, the personal interests of the members.
March 12, 1920, saw the organization of the very first Lions Club in Canada, in Windsor, and being the first club outside of the United States, entitled the association to call itself the International Association of Lions Clubs.
The Kincardine club ‘serves’ through sponsoring local programs, community donations and projects, such as the Northside Boardwalk, Lions Park playground, the Band Shell at Victoria Park, School Crossing Guard Shelters and Lighthouse staircase.
The club is proud of the recent addition to Lions Park and appreciates the community for the financial support received in partnering with the Lions to create a ‘premier destination for families’ in Kincardine.
