Organizers hope to make this year's Terry Fox Run the best ever
Organizers are hoping to make this year's Terry Fox Run the best ever.

The 37th annual event is slated for Sunday, Sept. 17, with registration beginning at 8 a.m. at the Davidson Centre. There will be snacks and face-painting. Blinky will be there and Mike Brough will be MC again this year.

The run/walk begins at 9 a.m. with a welcome by Kincardine mayor Anne Eadie, and a warm-up for those taking part. The Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band will lead the participants around the track, and then Kruz (Andy Kruzynski), in his commemorative police car, will lead the group out to the streets to take on either the five-kilometre or 10-kilometre route.

In honour of Canada's 150th birthday, organizers are hoping people will bring Canadian flags to carry on the run, as well as hats and other Canada Day paraphernalia to celebrate.

There will be refreshments available, and the Kinetic Knights (FRC Team 781) will be manning the water stations. Mention will be made of mentor Richard Yun, a strong supporter of the robotics team and the Terry Fox Run, who died of cancer in March of this year, as well as others who have lost their battle to cancer.

The goal is to raise $10,000 this year, and organizers encourage everyone, including residents of Ripley and Tiverton, to join in the run. Local schools hold their own Terry Fox Runs later in September. Last year, about 100 participants raised more than $14,500 for the Terry Fox Foundation in support of cancer research.

The Municipality of Kincardine will be raising the Terry Fox flag at the Davidson Centre, Monday, Sept. 11, and flying it through to the event.

Pledge sheets are available at RBC Royal Bank, Bruce Telecom, and the Davidson Centre, as well as on-line.

Members of this year's Terry Fox Run committee include Margaret Visser, Sue Peister, recreation supervisor Emma Smith, Holly McAdam, Mike Dupuis, and Kruz (Andy Kruzynski).
