EMC Power Canada Inc. is helping to shed some light on the Bruce Avenue soccer fields in Kincardine.

The company joined members of the Kincardine Co-ed Soccer Association and Men's Soccer, as well as the Kincardine parks and recreation department, to break ground on the project Tuesday evening.

EMC is putting in the lion's share of the $100,000 cost, with $10,000 from the adult soccer groups, $1,000 from the Huron United soccer team, and funds from other businesses and organizations. All donors will be recognized on the donor board which will be on-site at the completion of the project.

Lou Camara, president and shareholder of EMC, said he is proud the company is leading the charge on this project.

"Community involvement is necessary for enhancing our reputation in the community," he said. "It also illuminates the important relationship between the community and our company. Together, we can attract and retain employees who want to make Bruce County and Kincardine a great place to live, work and play."

Kincardine recreation director Karen Kieffer said the municipality is pleased with this project as well.

"We're excited about the opportunities that will exist moving forward for the soccer community and the development of partnerships within Kincardine," she said. "This type of co-operation will allow projects such as this to continue to make our community a better place to live."

In her report to council in July, Kieffer said the lighting project is for the senior field, located by itself across from the Ward 1 shop, and is designed for 11-on-11 games and, typically, adult soccer teams play there.

Earlier this year, EMC expressed an interest in becoming involved and/or donating to a community project and based on the company's strong electrical knowledge and expertise, it felt that the lighting project would be a perfect fit, stated Kieffer, adding that the cost was estimated at $92,000 plus about $8,400 to install a new single-phase service connection for the lights by Westario Power.

The project is slated to begin Monday (Aug. 21) and be completed by October, specifically in time for the Bruce Power soccer tournament on the weekend of Oct. 13-15.

EMC, a supplier with Bruce Power, opened an office in Kincardine last fall, leasing from AREVA on Highway 21 (former Canadian Agra building). EMC has operated since 2005, providing specialized construction management and multi-discipline trade services for transmission and generation power sector clients. The company offers a wide range of expertise in construction and the ability to provide clients with services, including manufacturing, installation, Inspection, modification, auditing and maintenance for power generation and distribution in nuclear and non-nuclear applications.

Taking part in the ground-breaking, Tuesday evening at the Bruce Avenue soccer fields, Kincardine, are Matt Brown (left) of Huron United men's soccer; Anirudha Panditrao of adult soccer; Charlie Sampson, EMC operations manager; Colin Elwood of adult soccer; Kincardine councillor Andrew White, chief administrative officer Sharon Chambers, and parks supervisor Chris Hartwick; Alex Pizycki, EMC senior quality assurance manager; Kincardine recreation director Karen Kieffer; and EMC president Lou Camara
