OPG receives yet another request about proposed DGR at Bruce Nuclear site
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is reviewing a new request for information from the federal minister of environment and climate change on its proposed Deep Geologic Repository (DGR) for the permanent disposal of low- and intermediate-level nuclear waste at the Bruce Nuclear site in the Municipality of Kincardine.

In a community update, Fred Kuntz, OPG's manager of corporate relations and communications in Bruce County, states that the minister has asked OPG to update its analysis of potential cumulative effects of the DGR on physical and cultural heritage, through its ongoing process with Saugeen Ojibway Nation (SON).

In 2013, OPG had committed that the DGR would not proceed to construction without the support of SON whose traditional territory includes the proposed location at the Bruce nuclear site.

OPG has been engaged in respectful, ongoing dialogue with SON – and that will continue, said Kuntz.

"The DGR would be Canada’s first deep repository for permanent disposal of nuclear waste – a lasting solution that international experts agree is best practice," he said. "After reviewing a decade of scientific research through record-long hearings, an independent Joint Review Panel concluded in 2015 that the Bruce site is appropriate, the environment and Lake Huron will be protected, and the DGR should be built 'now rather than later'.”
