98 the Beach team wins Kincardine Community Fund cardboard boat races
It was a close race, but the 98 the Beach team of Steve Howard and Craig Power managed to paddle ahead of the Black Squish, captained by Hugh and Curtis Campbell, to win the second annual Kincardine Community Fund cardboard boat races, Saturday morning at Station Beach, Kincardine.
Ten boats took part, with several capsizing in their first heat, while others stayed high and dry throughout the competition.
More than 100 people crowded onto the beach to watch the event, as the sunshine gradually warmed up a cool start to the morning.
Doing the play-by-play were Mike Brough as Captain Pete, and Laura Haight as Peg Leg Peg, while lifeguards maintained a vigil in Lake Huron to ensure a safe event.
The first heat saw Community Foundation Grey-Bruce's Float for Good boat take on 98 the Beach which took the win.
Then it was the Polar Bear Bear Express over The Copper Moose, the Black Squish ahead of Dr. Nick, Ben White winning against his brother, Alex, and The Mud Turtle II taking the win over Boaty McBoat Face.
The Spirit Award went to the Walker House's Mud Turtle II, captained by Emma Dixon and Lori Ogilvie.
The Fan's Choice Award went to the Black Squish, with Curtis, 7, and Hugh Campbell, 10, of Elliott Lake, who had some help from their grandparents, Judith (Mimi Scuttlebutt) and John Bond (Captain Retired) of Kincardine.
The Epic Sinking Award went to Lauren and Shannon Jackson of Kincardine, and The Copper Moose.
The races are a fund-raiser for the Kincardine Community Fund which is also selling jars of Spicy Beans, available at the tourist booth, and from members of the community fund committee.
