Kincardine Special Olympic athletes headed for nationals in Newfoundland next year

Five Kincardine Special Olympics athletes have been chosen to compete at the nationals in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, next year.

The curling team of Tyler Jilek, Ryan Brodhagen, Jackie McDonald, and Chris Weese, and figure skater Rosie Laidler, won gold at the provincials in January, and will now begin training for the national winter games slated to run in February or March, 2016.

Named to the Training Squad for Nationals, the athletes must commit to training twice per week, as of now. They will then be cross-training through the summer until they can get back on the ice, and must meet their commitment to train or risk not making it to the final roster which will be issued closer to the national games.

Meanwhile, the athletes and the Kincardine Special Olympics community will be fund-raising to send these talented individuals to the nationals. The cost is estimated at $1,200 to $1,500 per athlete.

There is a fund-raising page set up for Special Olympics in Kincardine. Anyone wishing to donate to the organization, in general, or specifically for the national team athletes, can click on the link below for further details:
