Sexuality researcher brings engaging, lively presentation to Kincardine
Dr. Robin Milhausen isn't afraid to ask those nosy questions that make people uncomfortable but also make them think about what's going on in their lives and how to improve things.
A highly-respected sexuality researcher at the University of Guelph, she brought her lively and engaging presentation to Kincardine for the Girl's Night Out event, held Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Best Western Plus Governor's Inn.
Grinning at the audience of about 60 ladies, half of which were women in their 40s and 50s, she said this was her kind of crowd. Then, she urged everyone to answer questions and if the answer was correct, she had prizes which included condoms and flavoured lube, as well as the grand prize, a vibrator.
Milhausen has been a sex educator for 20 years and been featured on television. She also teaches at the University of Guelph and does presentations on sexuality, relationships and intimacy.
"Myself, I've been in a relationship for 17 years and have two young children," she said. "So, the question tonight is aimed at me as well - how do you keep things exciting for the next 50 years?"
She said the passionate part of any relationship begins to dim after almost three years together; then it gradually switches to companionship. That's why many couples split up at about that time because they are trying to maintain that passion, rather than a long-term relationship.
"You ladies in this room who have been in a relationship for 25-30 years, you are my people," she said.
Taking an interactive stance, she asked the audience what keeps the spark alive through the years, and received such answers as going on a date night, doing nice things for each other, and keeping things lively in the bedroom.
Milhausen then conducted Sex Trivia, offering some interesting information from her research. With regard to frequency of sex, she noted that the benefits of pleasurable sex level off at about once per week - and that pleasure equates to about $25,000 per year in increased income.
"Adults in that 40-49 age group have so much to do and they're tired," she said. "We're finding that they're enjoying sex more than talking about it. And men are more in the moment; women are too busy thinking about all the things they have to do."
She stressed that hugging and touching after sex, even for just six minutes, is important for men and women in order to maintain a strong relationship. Also important is feeling desired, she said, as both men and women yearn for compliments.
A Sexpert Panel followed with six volunteers from the audience, including MC Joe Carter, and some hilarious answers to the questions.
Girl's Night Out also featured a silent auction, games and contests, a fashion show by The Loop and Penetangear in Kincardine, and PicaBooth photo booth.
A fund-raiser for the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation, the event netted $900 for the cause.
Organizer Deborah MacDonald offered appreciation to Milhausen for her enlightening and dynamic presentation; to her team for the hard work and support, Joe Carter, Linda Bowers, Kristy Rouse, and Jackie Child; to Missy of The Loop and Darrel Perry of Penetangear and their models for the fashion show; to community partner the Best Western Plus Governor’s Inn with compliments to Gail Grass and her staff; to Liz Dadson of the Kincardine Record, Barb McKay of the Kincardine Independent, myFM 95.5 and Martin Rutledge of PicaBooth for "in-kind" donations.
She was also grateful for all the generous contributions to the silent auction and gift table. Among the donors were the following:
