Firefighters running fire drill in Kincardine for Fire Prevention Week
Kincardine Fire and Emergency Services is planning to run a fire drill at a newer building in the Town of Kincardine, in recognition of Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 8-14.
Fire prevention officer Shane Watson says the event is the fire department's way of making everyone aware that regardless if you are in an apartment building, supermarket, library, at home or wherever, there are key things to remember if there's a fire, such as: know where your exits are; know how to get out safely; and know where the meeting spot is for everyone.
"There are additional things to be aware of, but if you know the essentials, you’re already ahead of the game," says Watson. "Furthermore, this is an opportunity to find out how Kincardine Fire and Emergency Services approaches different scenarios and you can ask us about anything!"
Those who wish to participate, should contact Watson at
swatson@kincardine.net or
519-396-2141, Ext. 5, for further information on where the event is taking place and what time, or how to book a free home inspection!
Best Friends Bakery has generously donated treats to anyone who decides to observe the event.
Besides the fire drill, the fire department is also involved in the following:
- ‘Adventures with Sparky,’ in Denice Kirk's Kindergarten class at Kincardine Township-Tiverton Public School. The students will each be given the opportunity to take Sparky home with them and create their very own Home Escape Plan with their parents/guardians.
- Members of the Grey Bruce Fire Prevention Officers Association were dropping the puck at the Owen Sound Attack game Saturday, to kick off Fire Prevention Week, as well as answering spectators' questions and providing them with educational material for fire safety.
- The fire prevention officer and the Tiverton firefighters will be at the Tiverton Fall Fair, Sunday, to provide the public with some hands-on training and public education.
- Tuesday, Oct. 10, Watson will be at the Davidson Centre in the morning to provide answers to fire safety questions.
- The Kincardine Library has a fire safety display, depicting a working Home Escape Plan along with lots of fire safety information.
EVERY SECOND COUNTS! PLAN TWO WAYS OUT!
Practise your Home Fire Escape Plan during Fire Prevention Week
Kincardine fire prevention officer Shane Watson is urging families in Kincardine to practise their Home Fire Escape Plan as part of Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 8-14, whose theme is, “Every Second Counts: Plan Two Ways Out!”
“In a fire, you may have just seconds to safely escape your home,” says Watson. “Be prepared in advance with these simple steps for home fire escape planning."
- Assess the needs of everyone in your home
- Identify anyone who requires assistance to get out of the home safely, such as small children or older adults
- Make sure that you have working smoke alarms on every storey of the home and outside all sleeping areas, and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms outside all sleeping areas if you have fuel-fired appliances or an attached garage
- Identify all possible exits (doors and windows) and make sure they work (two ways out, if possible)
- Everyone must know what to do when the smoke alarm or CO alarm sounds
- Assign someone to help those who need assistance
- Identify a safe meeting place outside
- Call 911 from outside the home – from a neighbour’s home or a cell phone
- Practise your Home Fire Escape Plan at least twice a year
- Have everyone participate
- Make changes to your plan, if necessary
