Ripley-Huron Fall Fair has a soggy start but a sunny Saturday
The 154th annual Ripley-Huron Fall Fair had a soggy start, Friday (Sept. 29), but glorious fall weather arrived for Saturday (Sept. 30).

Besides the ambassador competition, which saw Jennelle Smeltzer crowned the new fall fair ambassador, Friday night featured the frog-jumping competition, events under the lights at the ball diamond, the midway and the Lawn Tractor Pull. The rainy weather made the outdoor activities challenging, but the competitions continued anyway.

Saturday was a definite improvement, as the sun shone and warm weather brought out a huge crowd, particularly for the Mammoth Parade.

Following the parade, MC Sam Finnie welcomed everyone to the opening ceremonies. Dignitaries included Huron-Kinloss mayor Mitch Twolan who is also Bruce County warden, Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson and MP Ben Lobb who presented a Canada-150 coin set to the new ambassador. Lobb noted that Jennelle has the hardest slap-shot of any fall fair ambassador.

Karl Heinisch, president of the Ripley Agricultural Society, and homecraft president Fran Farrell presented an award to Josie Middelkamp for the highest points as a junior exhibitor; and the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies (OAAS) Award of Merit to Sam and Heather Finnie.

Dave Patterson presented the Gordon Patterson award for the most points in three field crops, to Smeltzer Farms.

Joe and Bev Fry then officially declared the fair open.

The fair also featured the 4-H Beef, Dairy and Sheep Shows, the Poultry Show, the Light Horse Show, and the Heavy Horse Show, as well as the T-Bone Show and Sale, Bervie Zoological Park, Mega Machines, a car and truck show, antique tractor show, Black Rock Climbers, Clarol the Clown and Snippity the Clown, and entertainment by Pat Lucknow, and Lorusso School of Dance.

The day ended with a dance to "Highway 21."
