No Saugeen Bluffs Maple Syrup Festival next year
The Saugeen Valley Conservation Foundation has decided to defer the Saugeen Bluffs Maple Syrup Festival for 2018.

“It was a very difficult decision," said Catherine Dickison, foundation chairperson.

The festival has been ongoing since 1969, and is one of the oldest in the region.

“Increased competition has been very difficult on the festival,” said Dickison. “In a rural area, there is only so much to go around. In addition, poor weather over the past few years has meant that the festival has been running in the red.

“We felt perhaps we would take a break for a year and see if things change We’re not a group that gives up easily and we will continue to evaluate the feasibility of hosting a maple syrup event.

“As a foundation, we’ve also discussed the possibility of ‘looking outside the box’ and seeking out other ideas and new venues! Perhaps it’s time for something different. We’re trying to keep our options open at every level.”

The foundation will continue to host the popular Christmas in the Country, held at Sulphur Spring Conservation Area. This year's event is slated for Nov. 24-26.

In addition, the foundation will host the Memorial Grove Tree Program, where individuals can request a tree to be planted in memory of a loved one, as well as the Celebration Forest Program, where individuals can dedicate a full-grown tree to family, friends and neighbours, for special events such as birthdays, retirements, and anniversaries.

The foundation consists of a number of local individuals with a genuine interest in conservation and the well-being of the environment. It raises much-needed funds for Saugeen Conservation.

“We thank everyone for their incredible support,” said Dickison. “Local residents, volunteers, businesses, retailers, companies, are all key to our success as a foundation. We can’t thank them enough!

"We also want the public to know that we will continue to host various functions in our role as fund-raisers for local environmental projects and programs. We all benefit in this regard. After all, it’s all about making this a better place to live, grow and play!"
