Pink Butterflies donate hair, and raise $4,000 for the cancer society
The Pink Butterflies have donated their hair and raised $4,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.
The Tiverton team of six includes the Berndt family - Rob, Lisa, Rachel, Emily and Aliya - and family friend, Jessi Roppel.
Lisa, her daughters, and Jessi all donated their hair, while Rob was the incentive behind the hair donations and the cancer fund-raising. He told the team he would allow the girls to shave his head if they raised a lot of money and donated their hair.
"We usually just donate our hair about every two years," said Lisa. "But my mother fought cancer for many years and died this past May, so we wanted to raise money to donate to the cancer society in her memory."
The team even had shirts made to wear to the event.
Wednesday evening (Oct. 11), the team went to Sonas Hair Salon in Port Elgin and made the hair donations. Lisa said that Sonas would not accept money for the haircuts, but instead donated the funds toward the cancer society.
The donated hair is used to make wigs for people who have lost their hair due to cancer treatments.
