Ripley Horticultural Society learns about trees from Betty Lamont

The Ripley and District Horticultural Society met at the Ripley-Huron Community Centre, Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 18), to enjoy a very full program.

Guest speaker Betty Lamont of the Kincardine Horticultural Society gave an enthusiastic and knowledgeable presentation on trees: their importance, care, how to make appropriate choices, diseases, and what we can learn from them.

Accompanied by lovely photographic images, her talk led the group through a virtual tour of the replanted courthouse park in Goderich and her own property in Inverhuron.

While talking about tree diseases, Lamont playfully suggested ways to dress up a stump, effectively making “lemonade” out of an arboreal tragedy.

In the concluding portion of her presentation, to the delight of the audience, she shared words of wisdom that apply equally to trees and people.

At this point, members were invited to enjoy refreshments, purchase goodies at the bake table, and place silent auction bids on donated plants, bulbs and bouquets.

The meeting soon reconvened to attend to society business.

President Sandra MacDonald announced with regret the resignation of treasurer, Mary Rose Walden, and expressed gratitude for her years of service to the society. She invited members to consider taking on this important role in the new year.

Tryntje Eisen thanked all who helped decorate and represent the society on the prize-winning fall fair float. She also gave a report on the 2017 activities of the "For Our Youth" junior horticultural club, including awards earned at local, district and provincial levels.

As the meeting concluded, final bids were announced for the plant auction and members paid for their purchases. The combined bake sale and silent auction proceeds came to $225.

The next meeting takes place Nov. 15 at the Ripley-Huron Community Centre at noon. This is the Christmas Potluck and Bows and Boughs greenery auction. Members are encouraged to bring a guest.
