Ripley Horticultural Society members enjoy Christmas potluck lunch, prizes and auction
The Ripley and District Horticultural Society welcomed 28 members and 14 guests to the annual Christmas potluck lunch, Wednesday afternoon at the Ripley-Huron Community Centre.
President Sandra MacDonald opened the meeting with the singing of "O Canada," followed by "The Lord's Prayer," and everyone enjoyed a delicious smorgasbord meal.
Following the lunch, Carolyn White of RBC Royal Bank presented a gift to Gail Vander Hoek who had the most points in this year's flower show.
MacDonald presented the Ontario Horticultural Association (OHA) president's award to Mary Rose Walden for her outstanding contributions as treasurer. Walden has retired as treasurer so the group is looking for another member to take on that position.
Liz Dadson, editor of the Kincardine Record on-line news source, presented a Kincardine Record hat to Christine Roberts, press reporter for the group, and thanked her for the hard work and dedication that she devotes to the job, submitting regular reports and photos about the horticultural society's events throughout the year. Dadson also had a hat for Tryntje Eisen who submits reports and photos about the For Our Youth club, but Eisen was absent, so the hat will be presented later.
Further business included the roll call and treasurer's report, and with that out of the way, the group was ready to enjoy some Christmas fun.
Dianne Simpson drew some names for door prizes, and then was joined by Fran Farrell and Keith Vander Hoek to lead in the carol-singing.
Then, the highlight of the afternoon, the auction of 14 beautiful Christmas planters created by Gail Vander Hoek and her team of MacDonald, Roberts and Eleanor Campbell. There were some tough bidding wars, but when the dust had settled, each planter was going to a good home.
The members wished each other a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
The next meeting will be held Jan. 17, 2018, at the Ripley Legion.
