What a busy, fun week for most of the folks in Purple Grove. We are sorry some are not feeling well; please get better soon.
Congratulations to the Kincardine Community Singers for a wonderful concert. And to the HAWK Theatre young people in Lucknow - their "Aladdin Kids" play was well-received.
The family of Janet and Jack Farrell gathered last Saturday at the home of Janice and George Millars in Dorchester.
Marilyn and Don Reid enjoyed the program and turkey dinner at the Kinlough Presbyterian Church, Sunday.
Seniors in our area appreciate the Christmas cake that was given to them by the Ripley and District Lions Club, Saturday. Thanks for your kindness.
Our sympathy is sent to Margaret Johnston Hedley and family, on the death of Al Hedley.
The Finnies are thankful for all the help they received from the Ripley Fire Department, Pollock Electric, and all their neighbours, when the wind storm wreaked havoc on their hydro. What a blessing to live in such a caring community.
Mary Anne Kukoly visited with Largaret McInnes at Trillium Court, Sunday. The blowing snow on the way home made the trip a tad interesting! Please stay safe folks while you are on the roads (and sidewalks).
Largaret McInnes and Karen attended the Dore/McInnes family Christmas gathering at the home of Dianne and Allan Gottschalk in Shakespeare, Dec. 3.
Congratulations to the Ripley Novice and Atom Rep. hockey teams. They played in a hockey tournament in the Muskokas on the weekend and are "A" champions.
The Ripley-Huron Community School Christmas concert is Dec. 14th; dress rehearsal is at 9:30 a.m. and the concert is at 1:30 p.m. Snow date is Dec. 15. Hope to see all the parents, grandparents and interested folks out to enjoy the talents of our youngsters and thank the teachers for all their hard work.
The annual Purple Grove Christmas Concert was well-attended and enjoyed by everyone. MC Heather Finnie was her usual capable self and kept the program running smoothly. Mary Anne Kukoly read a poem that Grannie Annie used to recite. We were entertained by the Zuk boys who came all the way from Walkerton; Sinead Greenwood played piano solos; Jaclyne Newman also played a piano solo. Harry Hollands, Joliciah Quammie and Emilie Labelle told us all about some of the customs surrounding Christmas - their costumes made the scenario very convincing.
Fran Farrell and Heather Finnie led a rousing rendition of "The 12 Days of Christmas," with great audience participation. The perennial favourite of Here Comes Santa Cows," was sung and wouldn’t you know it, Santa arrived while we were singing. Santa had help from Sinead in handing out the Christmas gifts that were under the tree. In turn, Santa received a gift from all of us for showing up early (before Christmas Day) to visit with us. Thanks Diane Clifford and Fran Farrell for organizing the evening, and to Doug MacDonald for getting us the tree.
PURPLE GROVE WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
The December meeting of the Purple Grove Women's Institute was held at Janet Rhody’s home. Everyone enjoyed seeing Janet’s marvellous display of Christmas decorations.
President Deanna Scott opened the meeting with a lovely reading about the Christmas season. She also read the Scripture from Luke 2. Fran Farrell read the minutes and gave the treasurer’s report, and read the thank you letter from the Huron Shores Hospice committee. Fran reported on the Remarkable Women of Bruce County gathering held in Underwood recently, and how impressed she was by the variety of ways women are contributing to our communities.
The Roll Call was answered with a child’s gift for the Ripley and area Christmas Hamper. The blood donor clinic was discussed. Fran Farrell and Diane Clifford talked about the Christmas concert at the Purple Grove Community Centre, Friday evening. We also discussed the current phone scams and noted that "If it sounds too good to be true," it is probably a scam.
Convener Mary Anne Kukoly had a couple of Christmas-themed readings and then turned the meeting over to Sandra Husk who demonstrated how to make Christmas cards before turning everyone loose to make their own. What fun, and there were some very creative cards made. Cards were signed by everyone for members unable to attend – Shirley MacDonald, Largaret McInnes and Donna Swan.

Lunch was served by Janet Nixon and Christine Roberts, and then the round-table discussion began. A lot of the world’s problems were solved during that discussion. Deanna thanked Janet Rhody, Janet Nixon, Christine Roberts and Mary Anne Kukoly. The meeting closed with the singing of "O Canada."
