Impaired driver crashes vehicle then assaults witnesses
(ASHFIELD-COLBORNE-WAWANOSH, ON) - A 20-year-old Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh man is facing charges, following a police investigation that took place in mid-November.
At 11:44 p.m., Nov. 17, Huron County OPP officers responded to a single motor-vehicle collision that took place on Donnybrook Line between Belgrave Road and Belfast Road. Police arrived on scene to find a heavily-damaged Hyundai that had landed on its roof in the ditch.
Subsequent police investigation determined an eye witness observed the collision and stopped to assist the driver. Presumably fearing apprehension by police the drunk driver pleaded for the witness to not call police. Once the driver knew police were on the way, he took a swing at the witness. Fortunately, the witness wasn't struck and avoided injury. The suspect then fled the scene on foot.
OPP Canine and West Region Emergency Response Team members attended the scene and searched for the man, but he was not immediately located.
However, it wasn't long before police positively identified the driver and Nov. 28, he was arrested without incident.
Kennedy SCOTT, 20, of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh has been charged with Impaired Driving, Assault and Fail to Remain. He has a court appearance scheduled for Jan. 8, 2018, at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich.
