Don Matheson (above) is the Ontario Liberal candidate for Huron-Bruce. The Saugeen Shores councillor, hockey team general manager, and teacher, was nominated Saturday in Lucknow.

“I was taught from a young age to be a person who gets involved and contributes to my community," said Matheson, "and I am ready to take my experience serving our town to the provincial level. I am inspired by the progressive policy agenda of premier Kathleen Wynne.

“I want to help build and shape what happens in our communities. I want to help build a better Ontario and a better Huron–Bruce by fighting for fairness in our communities through bold policies, such as free tuition and free pharmacare, as well as a $15 minimum wage and small-business tax cut.”

As a Saugeen Shores council, Matheson served as a member of the Southampton 150 Committee, as chairman of the Recreation and Active Transportation Committee, on the Chamber of Commerce and on the Southampton Business Improvement Area. He has been a local minor hockey coach and is currently the general manager of the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks Senior 'AA' hockey team.

Born and raised in Southampton, he graduated from Saugeen District Secondary School, where he now teaches history. He and his wife, Sarah, a local elementary school teacher, have two teenage children, both of whom also attend SDSS. Matheson graduated from York University and Medaille College, and has worked with the Bluewater District School Board for more than 20 years.

He is ready to take on the Progressive Conservatives (PCs) in the June 7 provincial election.

The Liberals believe PC leader Patrick Brown, Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson and the Conservatives would cut more than $12-billion from essential services that people depend on, such as health care and education. Under the leadership of premier Kathleen Wynne, the Ontario Liberal Party has a plan to deliver opportunity and fairness for everyone.

While Ontario has a balanced budget and growing economy, not everyone is feeling that growth yet. That’s why the Liberals are working to deliver a fairer, better Ontario through free tuition for 210,000 students, free prescription drug coverage for children and youth, 100,000 affordable child-care spaces, and a $15-per-hour minimum wage.
