Bruce Power urges public engagement prior to licence-renewal hearings in March

Bruce Power is launching additional community engagement activities in January and February, regarding its licence-renewal process, with Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) hearings scheduled to begin in March.

“Bruce Power will present the case to the CNSC for an extension to our licence to operate the site, which will provide us with the licence we require to continue our Life-Extension Program over the next 10 years,” said James Scongack, vice-president, corporate affairs and environment.

“We have had a very active and engaging conversation with the community on our licence-renewal application since August, 2016, and this will be another opportunity for people to take part in the process.”

Bruce Power invites the community to enjoy Bruce County beef-on-a-bun while learning more about the upcoming hearings. Sessions will be held in the main reception halls at The Plex in Port Elgin, Monday, Jan. 22, and Kincardine’s Davidson Centre, Tuesday, Jan. 23, both from 4-8 p.m.

Community members have the opportunity to engage with Bruce Power employees about the licence-renewal application and process, and have their questions answered. Bruce Power will also be launching more opportunities for information and engagement over the next two months, including:
 

• An on-line and social media outreach effort with information and videos on topics of interest.
• The mailing of a summary of the key issues Bruce Power has heard about and an opportunity for feedback to 60,000 homes in Bruce, Grey and Huron counties.
• A webinar on Bruce Power’s licence-renewal process will be held Wednesday, Jan. 31, from 9-10 a.m. Attendees must register via the link at www.brucepower.com/licencerenewal2018.
• Polling conducted by Ipsos-Reid Public Affairs in February to measure public opinion on key issues.
• Ongoing opportunities for direct engagement on questions members of the public have by telephone, E-email or by visiting the Bruce Power Visitors’ Centre.

CNSC hearings will be held March 14 in Ottawa, and May 30-31 in Kincardine. Intent to act as an intervenor in the Kincardine session must be made by April 28 to www.nuclearsafety.gc.ca/eng/the-commission/intervention.
