Tenants able to return to Bruce County affordable housing units in Mildmay
Residents have returned home to their Bruce County affordable housing units in Mildmay, after the building was evacuated Jan. 12, following a water leak.
Monday, the Grey Bruce Health Unit completed its follow-up inspection and review of air quality and product residue in the basement (crawl space) at the housing unit. The county also received notification that potable water is present and available for all units, and confirmation was received that the air quality is at a safe level and the tenants are free to return home.
The restoration firm will remain on-site for the coming days to further the air exchange throughout the building.
“The county appreciates the understanding of our tenants," said warden Paul Eagleson. "This has been a challenging issue to get resolved. I wish to reiterate again how pleased I am with the county staff members and their diligence in resolving this issue.”
County chief administrative officer Kelley Coulter said the damage caused by the mechanical failure and the presence of a product that is not used in normal operations, has been a challenge. "It was reassuring to receive notification of clearance for the tenants to return today (Jan. 22).”
Returning the tenants to their homes remained the primary goal for the housing team. The completion of an in-depth review for educational purposes and continuous improvement, will be finalized in the coming weeks.
