Huge Snow Cat wins snow sculpture contest at Tiverton Winterfest

A huge Snow Cat, created by the Hutter and Owens families of Kincardine, took first prize in the snow sculpture contest at Tiverton Winterfest, held on the weekend.

Last year's winners, the Kunkel and McKenzie families of Tiverton, won second for their intricately-detailed Snail, while the MacDonald family of Tiverton won third with its Lazy-Boy Podium featuring snowmen winning medals in the Winter Olympics.

Sponsored by the Tiverton Lions Club, the event saw judges Ron Manto and Ron Simmons struggling to make the difficult decision between the first- and second-place finishers. Then, everyone was welcome to the Lions Hall for free hot dogs and hot chocolate.

It was all part of the fun at the two-day Winterfest celebration which began Saturday morning with a pancake breakfast put on by the Tiverton Goodtimers. The hockey club served bacon, eggs, pancakes and sausage, with all the fixings, to a crowd of more than 250, including 216 adults and 42 children, followed by a draw for sports tickets and raffle prizes.

Fifteen-month-old Layla Glover of Tiverton won the Toronto Blue Jays baseball tickets, while Sarah MacDonald of Tiverton won the Owen Sound Attack hockey tickets, both sponsored by Miller Insurance.

Candice Auger of Tiverton won the Home Hardware gift basket; Melissa Sanders of Kincardine won the Quinn Florist flowers; Karen Ballok of Inverhuron and Chistine Ruff of Kincardine won the Pet Valu gift baskets; Janet Adams of Paisley won tickets to the NHL Alumni Game in Owen Sound; and Roy Farquhar of Tiverton won the Jake Gardiner autographed picture.

The Tiverton Library staff invited youngsters out of the cold and snow, to enjoy story time, songs, games and crafts.

Saturday afternoon, Don Scott and his family of Teeswater, brought their team of mules, “Pat” and "Ruby," and took people on sleigh rides, with driver Cedric Scott at the reins. It was a snowy, cold day so everyone was bundled up for the outdoors.

A euchre party was held at the Whitney Crawford Community Centre, sponsored by the Tiverton Agricultural Society.

Sunday, featured a worship service and chili luncheon at Knox Presbyterian Church, followed by a family fun skating party at the Tiverton Sports Centre, sponsored by the Tiverton Lions Club; and Open Mic with Andrew Parkhouse, and a hot ham supper, at the Whitney Crawford Community Centre, sponsored by the Tiverton Agricultural Society.
