Nomination period begins Tuesday for Oct. 22 municipal election
The next municipal election will be held Monday, Oct.22.

The nomination period commences, Tuesday, May 1, at 8:30 a.m. and closes Nomination Day, Friday, July 27, at 2 p.m.

In the Municipality of Kincardine, there are five positions voted at-large, meaning the entire electorate can vote for these people: mayor and four members at-large (the one with the most votes becomes the deputy mayor.

The remainder of the positions are separated into the three wards: Ward 1 – two members; Ward 2 – one member; and Ward 3 – one member.

For the first time, Kincardine will be using an Internet/Telephone voting system. Electors will receive a notice in the mail providing instructions and a secure PIN number to use to vote using either the internet or telephone. Internet/Telephone Voting Procedures may be found here.

In the Township of Huron-Kinloss, there are seven members of council to vote for – mayor, deputy mayor and five councillors – who will take office Dec. 2, 2018, for a four-year term, ending Nov. 14, 2022.

The township will be using a telephone and Internet method of voting. PIN numbers will be mailed out to all electors on the Voters’ List in October. Each eligible voter may use his/her PIN and cast one vote, either via Internet or telephone during the Voting Period, from: Monday, Oct. 15, to Monday, Oct. 22, at 8 p.m.

The municipal election also includes voting for school board trustees.

A person is entitled to vote if he/she:
 
  • Is a Canadian Citizen
  • Is at least 18 years old
  • Resides in the local municipality, or is the owner or tenant of land there, or is the spouse of such owner or tenant
  • Is not prohibited from voting under Section 17 Subsection 3 or otherwise by law

FILING NOMINATION PAPERS

Every person who wishes to be a candidate must file nomination papers prior to receiving any campaign contributions and/or expending any funds on a campaign. A candidate may file his or her nomination papers as of May 1, during regular business hours.

The nomination of a person for an office on council must be endorsed by at least 25 people and the person endorsing the nomination must be eligible to vote in an election for an office within the municipality if a regular election were held on the day that the person endorses the nomination.

There are no endorsements required for nominations for school board trustees.
