Accessibility Man: Winter - an accessible point of view

Accessibility Man: Winter - an accessible point of view
Winter can be a challenge for anyone, but for people living with a disability, it can be extra difficult. There are so many barriers to plan for and obstacles to overcome.

If you live on your own, the first item on your check-list is to hire someone to keep your driveway and walkway clear of ice and snow. You need to be able to get out of your house if you plan to go anywhere.

Mobility equipment should be serviced and kept fully-charged. Rubber tips or ice grippers for canes, plus proper foot wear with non-slip treads, are a good idea.

Everyone, not just people with disabilities, should keep extra food in the house just in case you are stuck inside for a few days.

Now that you have decided to go uptown, what should you do? Something as simple as what to wear poses a challenge to a person in a wheelchair. Bulky winter clothing bunches up when you are sitting down and can be uncomfortable. You should dress in layers and always wear gloves. You can’t drive a wheelchair if you have your hands in your pocket!

Once you are outside you have to plan a safe route. This is where home owners and business owners can help. By keeping sidewalks, curbs and roadways clear of slush, ice and snow, they will be helping everyone. It is also a good idea to have a buddy with you. If you get stuck, then he/she can help.

All the constant planning needed to overcome challenges can make you feel that you should just stay home. That can lead to loss of independence, and loneliness. Depression and anxiety will soon follow.

Try to make the effort to connect with others, get out in the fresh air, try a new winter sport. Winter can be a lot of fun, if you let it.
