South Bruce OPP report theft; and remind of scams

POLICE INVESTIGATING THEFT OF COPPER

(KINCARDINE, ON) – April 27, at 9:26 a.m., the South Bruce OPP received the report of a theft from the former landfill site along Valentine Avenue in Kincardine.

Sometime between 3:30 p.m. April 25, and 8:30 a.m. April 27, more than 200 metres of copper wire was taken. The value of the stolen property is estimated to be more than $2,000.

Suspicious vehicles and suspicious people should be reported to police as soon as possible so that an officer can investigate.

SCAM ALERT

(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – The South Bruce OPP is sending another reminder to watch out for cons and scams, following recent reports of scam attempts in the detachment area.

  • April 24, a resident of Arran-Elderslie Township reported an E-mail from “Canada Revenue Agency” looking for personal  information to file a tax return

  • April 24, a resident of the Municipality of Kincardine reported a “Termination of Account” E-mail from “Bruce Telecom” looking for information

Canada Revenue Agency and Bruce Telecom are both legitimate agencies, but neither had any involvement with these Email messages. Both of these scam attempts were recognized, so no response was sent back.

Modern, tech-savvy, scammers can create very convincing scams - oftentimes in the name of a legitimate company, so they can trick you into providing personal information or money. Your best defense is to verify any unsolicited message.  Unsolicited means that you didn’t ask for it. Contact the actual agency and verify who you’re dealing with before you ever consider responding.

Fraud is a multi-million-dollar enterprise that will only end when the con-artists stop making money. It’s your money; you work hard to earn it, so work hard to protect it.

Anyone interested in more information on fraud can contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) at 1-888-495-8501 or check on-line at http://www.antifraudcentre.ca.

The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information that can assist police to call 1-888-310-1122.  Should you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or send a web-tip to crimestop-gb.org, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
