Off the Broom - Kincardine Curling Club news

What was your favourite decade? That was the theme of the ladies bonspiel held in late March, and I would have to think the '80s was the winner. There were some really good outfits which, back then, we all thought were just ever so cool. No one had the big hair, though!
Twelve teams took part in this fun bonspiel, convened by Ashley Knight. One team put out a call for someone to be skip, and ex-Kincardine curler Joan Houston, who now curls in Ingersoll, answered the call. It was a good move as that team took first place in the early draw. Curling with Joan, were Jenny Showalter, Jackie Nesbitt (of Ripley) and Judy Watt. Thanks to Jackie for filling in at the last minute.
Second place was a tie between the team of Heather Struthers, Marg Cale, Marion Fink and Tekla Kennedy, and the team of Anne Burton, Gail MacIntosh, Nancy Boyer and Carol “Cookie” Quinn. Other teams were headed up by Beth Mimnagh, Barb Kester and Tania Dickson.
The late draw winners were Tammy Thompson’s team of Jennifer Elston, Alison Dinsmore and Olivia Turcotte. Second place was Vicki Culbert’s team of Goderich, followed by Jen Lawrie, Laura Haight, Cathy Alcombrack and The Chem Lab Girls. This team of Sunny Xiao, Brooke Leggett, Kerry Lynn Farrish, Amy McKay and Stacey Dahmer, was getting lessons prior to the spiel as the ladies were definitely novices but by the end of the day, they were rockin’ pretty good.

The OFL league wound up its season with a potluck lunch and two final games of curling. The buffet table looked so good—I bet it was a little harder to sweep those rocks in the second game after such a feast.

Peter Newton took his team up north to the Meaford area to play in an OCA competition recently. Unfortunately, the results are not known. The team apparently had to purchase the brushes like the “big boys” use to conform to the rules brought in about two years ago.

The competitive league held its playoffs just before the ice was to go out. Winning the A side, were Peter Newton, Steve Palmer, Mike Bunker and Dave Robinson who quite soundly defeated J.D. Matheson and his team of Scott Kester, and Chris and Dawson Farrell. Third place went to David Plourde, Noel and Jarratt MacIntosh and Bob Lockwood. Fourth place was the Jim Roberts team. Winner of the B side, was Team Sam Turcotte, and the Bologna Bowl winners were Barb Kester and her team of Beth Mimnagh, Barb Ross and Russell Lee.

The end of the season party, “Flip Your Grip,” was held last week. About 50 curlers enjoyed a scrumptious steak barbecue with part of the meal price going to our “Raise the Roof” fund. Trivia master Todd Thompson had some pretty tough questions for us to answer. Laura Haight, you better look out!

And on the final note of the season, for those who have already signed up for our golf event, the date to mark on your calendar is June 23, and payment will be due no later than May 31st. At the moment, the event is full but there is a waiting list so if you are interested, contact either Heather Struthers or Anne Burton and get your name added. Enjoy your summer!
