South Bruce OPP report pedestrian injured; and remind public to beware of scams

POLICE LOOKING FOR DRIVER INVOLVED IN PEDESTRIAN CRASH

(WALKERTON, ON) – May 8, at 12:46 p.m., the South Bruce OPP received the report of a crash involving a pedestrian along Yonge Street South in Walkerton.

Officers arrived to find that a 15-year-old Brockton teen was walking along the sidewalk around 12:10 p.m. when the pedestrian was struck by a black van leaving the Cameron’s Funeral Home parking lot. The teen was treated in hospital for minor injuries.  Anyone with information on the van, or the driver, is asked to call the South Bruce OPP.

The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information that can assist police to call 1-888-310-1122.  Should you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or send a web-tip to crimestop-gb.org, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.

DON’T PAY THE CON-MAN

(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – The South Bruce OPP is asking residents to continue watching out for cons and scams, following a report from a resident in the Municipality of Kincardine May 7.

A phone call was received from “Revenue Canada. This is a final warning …. you will be taken to court”.  A 613 area code call-back number was provided, but the call was recognized as a scam and no call-back was made.

Tech-savvy scammers use technology to create very convincing schemes to trick you into sending them money.  They will commonly use the name of a real company in order to gain your trust so that you will send money or personal information to them.

There is no magic to preventing fraud.  If it sounds too good to be true, it likely is.  Remember that you can’t win a contest that you didn’t enter in the first place. Your best defence is to verify any unsolicited contact.  Unsolicited means that you didn’t ask for it.

Fraud is a multi-million-dollar enterprise that will only end when the con-artists stop making money.
