Tiverton Fall Fair ambassador off to Hawaii this summer with Lions youth exchange

Tiverton Fall Fair Ambassador Kerri Rice is off on a new adventure this summer.

The 18-year-old, Grade 12 student at Kincardine District Secondary School, has been selected by the local Lions Clubs to go to Hawaii as a Canadian ambassador with the Lions youth exchange program.

Kerri will spend a month in Hawaii where she will stay with a host family for a week, and then head off to a youth camp with other students from around the world. She will have an opportunity to see historical landmarks, such as Pearl Harbour; meet with Lions Club members there; meet with government officials; and learn about, and explore, the islands of Hawaii.

While there, she will also be providing a presentation about Canada, Ontario, Bruce County and Tiverton.

"I am absolutely overjoyed about going on this youth exchange," says Kerri. "I wanted to go because I have never travelled before and this is an amazing opportunity that I know I will never have again. Plus, this is an experience that will be helpful in many aspects of my life."

Kerri was selected for the exchange because a teacher at KDSS put her name forward as a candidate. Shortly thereafter, she was contacted by the Huron Shores Lions Club about an interview with a couple of members of the club.

"During the interview, they asked me questions, such as why I would want to take part in this youth exchange, and why I thought I would be a good candidate for it," says Kerri. "The next day, they called me and said that I was going on the exchange!"

Kerri is excited to learn about other countries through the youth who are coming on the exchange. "I think it will be very interesting to have so many people from all different countries and cultures all together for a month," she says.

As for her future plans, Kerri will be studying psychology at the University of Guelph this fall. "While i am there, I am hoping to do a double-major, with psychology and criminal justice/public policy," she says. "I feel as though this exchange will prepare me for being on my own next year."
