Volunteers collect almost 200 pounds of trash at Kincardine beach clean-up
The Kincardine and area community once again showed its love for the beach and its support of the Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation at the third annual Kincardine shoreline clean-up, held Saturday morning at Station Beach, Kincardine.

The coastal centre partnered with several groups, including the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority (SVCA), the Kincardine Rotary Club, the Kincardine and District Lions Club, the Huron Fringe Field Naturalists, Sobeys, and the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) for this event.

Volunteers from the Rotary Club and Field Naturalists assisted with set-up, registration, distribution of materials, and sorting and weighing of garbage, as well as collection. In addition, 20 staff of 7ACRES and family members helped collect waste.

More than 80 participants, armed with work gloves, buckets and grabber sticks, fanned out over the beach and surrounding parkland to collect 197 pounds of trash. Items collected and recorded on the tally cards included hundreds of cigarette butts and innumerable items, ranging from beverage containers, bottle caps, food wrappers and packaging materials to tiny fragments of foam and plastic.

After their hard work, volunteers were treated to a barbecue lunch with food supplied by Sobeys and prepared and served by the Kincardine Lions.

The coastal centre and its event partners are grateful to everyone who participated in, or sponsored, the clean-up. For more information about the work of coastal centre and other sponsored events, visit www.lakehuron.ca.
