Huron OPP report two major incidents involving impaired drivers

IMPAIRED DRIVER LEADS POLICE ON LENGTHY CHASE

(ASHFIELD-COLBORNE-WAWANOSH, ON) -  A 61-year-old London man is facing several charges in relation to a lengthy police chase that occurred May 17.

Just after 2:30 p.m., Huron County OPP officers received a complaint of a possible impaired driver who was initially observed travelling northbound on London Road from Blyth. Officers immediately began to patrol for the suspect vehicle, a silver Hyundai Elantra, when they were informed the vehicle had turned around and was now heading southbound back into Blyth.

An OPP officer located the suspect vehicle on Gypsy Lane in Blyth and a traffic stop was attempted. The driver failed to pull over and proceeded to head westbound on Blyth Road. The officer chased the Elantra until a second officer arrived to help stop the suspect vehicle.

The two officers attempted a tandem stop on the suspect vehicle just east of Auburn; however, the driver refused to stop and began to accelerate through the Village of Auburn at a high rate of speed. At that point, the officers discontinued their chase and waited until other police vehicles were in position.

Within minutes, a responding patrol unit observed the suspect vehicle travelling westbound on Blyth Road at a high rate of speed, in excess of 50 km/h over the 90 km/h limit. Officers then observed the suspect vehicle travelling northbound on Bluewater Veterans Highway (Highway 21) at Point Farms Provincial Park.

Officers strategically followed the suspect vehicle northbound on Bluewater Veterans Highway until the officers performed a rolling block on the suspect vehicle. The chase came to an end when the suspect vehicle was safely stopped just south of Amberley near Zion Road.

Officers took the male driver into custody and placed him under arrest for Dangerous Driving and Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer. Officers also determined he was displaying several signs that he was impaired by alcohol. As a result, he was also placed under arrest for Impaired Driving.  He was transported to the Huron OPP detachment where he provided two samples of his breath to a qualified Intoxilizer Technician. Both of his tests were above the legal limit.

As a result, 61-year-old David STOLLAR of London has been charged with Impaired Driving, Drive Motor Vehicle – Over-80 Milligrams of Alcohol, Dangerous Driving, Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer and Racing. He has been since released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich, June 1.

He also received an automatic 90-day driver’s licence suspension and his motor vehicle has been impounded for seven days.

IMPAIRED DRIVER COLLIDES WITH TREE IN SALTFORD

(ASHFIELD-COLBORNE-WAWANOSH, ON) -  A 19-year-old Goderich man is facing three criminal charges, including a charge for Impaired Driving, following a crash in Saltford last week.

Monday, May 18, at 8:23 p.m., Huron County OPP and Huron County EMS responded to a single-motor-vehicle collision on Saltford Road south of Brinery Road.

Upon arrival, officers located a Chevrolet Silverado pick-up that had left the roadway and plowed into a tree on the north side of the road. The lone occupant in the truck was transported to hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

During the course of their investigation, officers determined the man had been drinking alcohol and was displaying signs that he was impaired by alcohol. He was placed under arrest for Impaired Driving and later he provided a suitable sample of his breath to a qualified Intoxilizer Technician. His test resulted in a reading above the legal limit.

Further investigation also revealed the driver was currently on conditions of release to abstain from the consumption of alcohol.

As a result, 19-year-old James HART of Goderich has been charged with Impaired Driving, Drive Motor Vehicle with Over-80 Milligrams of Alcohol, and Fail to Comply with Undertaking. He has since been released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for June 22, at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich.

His severely-damaged truck was impounded for seven days and he was also served with an automatic 90-day driver’s licence suspension.
