Off the Broom: Kincardine Curling Club season begins with “Men With Brooms” fund-raiser

November 27, 2019

The Kincardine Curling Club’s curling season got under way with a “Men with Brooms” fund-raiser held at Grey Matter. Thanks to Jen Lawrie for organizing this, to Grey Matter for hosting us, and to those who came and donated to our Raise the Roof fund.

Our annual general meeting was held Nov. 6 and a good turnout of curlers was welcomed by president Jim Newman and board members.

Regular draws began Monday, Nov. 11. A special thanks to those who put in so much time and effort to get the ice ready for the upcoming season. Y’all did a fine job!

This week is the start of our Learn to Curl program. Every Wednesday, beginning Nov. 27 and continuing for six weeks, there will be instruction on how to play the game of curling. Starting time is 7 p.m., and no equipment is needed other than clean running shoes and loose pants. To register or for more information, call David Plourde at 519-396-2300 or E-mail him at plourded@bmts.com

The Brokerlink Grey-Bruce Major league has begun and our club recently hosted one of the evenings. Representing Kincardine is the team skipped by Peter Newton. Pete’s team is one of several from the surrounding area that travel to various clubs to compete weekly. The higher calibre of curling is just one of the things that attracts the teams to join this league.

And with the start of curling season come bonspiels, bonspiels and more bonspiels. The Grey Bruce Senior Men’s bonspiel, held Nov. 13 in Chesley, was a great start to the season for the team of Jim Roberts, Mark Luckhardt, Art Doughty and Bryan MacDonald, who took first prize overall. Kincardine defeated Allenford, 9-2, in six ends and polished off the Durham team by a 10-2 score, also in six ends. The ice had a nine-foot swing which made it a lot of fun to play on. Really?

Walkerton held its annual ladies' spiel Nov. 16 and the Kincardine team of Heather Struthers, Beth Mimnagh, Gail Wright and Jane Downs, had a very successful day managing to finish as the top team there.

The Wingham “MacLean’s 6 Pack” bonspiel is rather unique as it has six-person teams that rotate through the game. Participating from Kincardine, were Andre Turcotte. Laura Haight, Carolyn Norman, Tania Dickson, Courtney Van Gleest, Jen Lawrie, Tammy Thompson, and Janice Matchett along with a little help from a few “out-of-towners.” The ladies placed fourth and fifth for the day.

The team of Jim Roberts, Mark Luckhardt, Art Doughty and Glyn Pinkney, took to the ice in another Grey Bruce Senior Men’s spiel, this time in Southampton, Nov. 20. The team won both games, defeating Meaford and Allenford, and finished second overall out of the eight teams entered. These spiels continue at various clubs throughout the curling season but, unfortunately, Kincardine will not be hosting one because apparently, the curlers do not like coming here because it is “too far to travel.” Good grief!

Lots of curling action coming up on television but why not come out and watch a little “live” curling at the club on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday evening? Or come and give it a try any Monday, Wednesday or Friday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. Love to see you there!
