Tiverton couple celebrates 72nd wedding anniversary

Maureen and Don Weber of Tiverton decided when they got married that they were going to stay together for the long haul.

And they have - for 72 years.

The couple celebrated the occasion, with a few good friends, at their 217 Birchwood Avenue home, where Maureen, 90, continues to live, while Don, 92, now lives at Trillium Court Seniors' Community in Kincardine.

Maureen Audrey Wright and Donald Phillip Weber were married June 2, 1943, by Rev. David Forsythe, in the office at the First United Church on William Street in Waterloo. Don had had been called up to serve in the Second World War so they were married before he headed out to Regina, Saskatchewan, where he was stationed. She travelled out to be with him, and then returned to Ontario to have their eldest child.

After the war, they stayed in Regina for three years before coming back to Ontario and living in Waterloo where he worked for MacDonald Electric and later Electrohome, and she worked for the Bank of Montreal. They moved to Tiverton in 1981.

They had three children, Lynne who lives in northern Ontario, Patty who died eight years ago, and Robert who lives in Cambridge. They also have five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, with another one due anytime.

So, how do you stay married for 72 years?

"We didn't really fight a lot," says Maureen. "We had our arguments, but we managed to work things out. We were in it for the long haul. And, as Don said on the day of our anniversary, 72 years is a long time!"
