To the Editor:
RE: Canada Day in Kincardine, Wednesday, July 1
Calling all residents, young and old! Come celebrate Canada Day, Wednesday, July 1, in good ole' Kincardine.
"The maple leaf flag is 50 years old this year. For five decades, our flag has remained a symbol of the people, the values and the accomplishments that have helped shape our national identity. Canada's flag is as recognizable in a village park as it is in outer space. The bold red and white Maple Leaf is a global symbol of democracy, freedom, multiculturalism, a badge of honour for fallen heroes, and a simple and poignant reminder of who we are and what we stand for." In this the 50th anniversary of our flag, your Canada Day committee is respectfully requesting that every household and business in Kincardine hoist the flag on their premises the week leading up to Canada Day.
The Canada Day parade starts at 11 a.m. sharp from the Legion, led by the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band. Following closely will be the Kincardine Air Cadets and school children, holding our huge Canadian flag similar to the way the flag is presented at the Olympics.
The official Canada Day ceremony gets under way at 11:30 a.m. at the flag pole at the waterfront (bottom of Harbour Street). New this year will be prizes for the youngest and oldest Canadian attending the ceremony. The words for "This Land Is Your Land," will be printed on a giant sign for you to loudly sing this great Canadian song at the proper time. A few short speeches by the dignitaries and the reading of the prize-winning poems by school children will take place.
Mike Walsh will be leading us in the singing of "O Canada," the likes of which has never been sung so heartily and loudly in Kincardine. Sing like nobody is listening! Her Worship, mayor Anne Eadie, and Bruce County warden Mitch Twolan will offer greetings to the crowd and will be jointly raising the flag.
As we sing so patriotically, all will be in awe as the largest flag in the county majestically makes its way up the flag pole. When the flag reaches its pinnacle, 148 helium-filled, biodegradable, red-and-white Canada Day balloons will be released to the heavens by Kincardine youth.
We live in the best country in the world! Come celebrate Canada at our beautiful waterfront. Come and give your chest muscles a good workout. Improve your posture - stand a little straighter and taller when you stand up for Canada on Canada Day morning in the best town in the country!
Tell your friends and family to come out and participate July 1 - rain or shine! Wear red and white - paint your face - stick on a maple leaf face tattoo - carry a wee Canadian flag to wave. Bring a noisemaker (whistle, cow bell, horn, etc.) to help make a joyful LOUD noise for Canada when the balloons are released. The pipe band pipers and drummers plan to make some historic unheard of individual "noises" - see if you can drown them out with your own joyful noise. Keep it going for a full 60 seconds! Do it, Kincardine! Just do it for Canada!
Plan to stick around after the ceremony for some Canada Day cake served by the ladies' auxiliary of the Kincardine Scottish and take in all the entertainment, food and fun activities at MacPherson Park. Hear the pipe band's first-ever rendition of "The Maple Leaf Forever," then tap your toes to Eliza Jane's Fiddlers. And remember the giant fireworks display at dusk - it will be awesome!
It will be a great day for Canada, eh?
Go Canada! Go Kincardine! Celebrate!
