Whose responsibility is it if people walk on closed pier, asks reader
To the Editor:
Saturday evening, I accompanied three older teenagers (age 17-plus) down to the beach on the north side in Kincardine.
One teen wanted to build a sand castle, one wanted to frolic in the waves, while the third one joined me in some rock-hunting.
We noticed a young family approach the pier. The warning blockade was there and the couple's three young children ran past.
Did they call them back? NOPE. The parents pulled out their cell phones and started filming ... panning even OFF the children to catch the harbour, lighthouse, sky and lake.
We could see the waves were reaching just inches from the top of the pier.
We all made eye contact and wondered, WHAT DO WE DO?
I tried to wave as I saw their youngest was running close to edge of the pier. The teen in the water tried to yell at them.
None of us had phones as it was to be a brief visit.
Should we have gone out to advise them? That's like following someone into a manure pit!
I wanted to leave as soon as possible because I felt helpless dealing with obvious ignorance, and I did not wish to view possible outcomes.
I guess I just want to know - whose responsibility is it?
